Why You Should Preview Furniture Placement Before You Move
It's common to sign a lease, order furniture and appliances right away, and only think about placement on moving day itself. That order of operations tends to lead to mistakes that are hard to undo.
Problems that are too late to fix by moving day
- Furniture doesn't fit through: ordering something wider than the door, elevator, or stairwell, then having to return it.
- Passage gets blocked: once the bed or sofa is in, the door or another piece of furniture cuts off your walking path.
- Clashes with outlets or windows: furniture ends up covering an outlet or window and has to be moved again.
- An appliance you actually need doesn't fit: checking the washer/fridge spot later only to find the doorway is too narrow.
A good order for simulating ahead of time
- Start with the size and rough shape of the room you've signed for, and build a floor plan.
- Place the fixed-position items first — sink, fridge, washer, and so on.
- Try candidate sizes for the furniture you still need to buy — bed, desk, sofa — to confirm they fit.
- Once no passage or door-swing warnings show up, buy at that exact size.
